Letter from the Chair

I am pleased to announce the creation of the student-run Latin America Policy Organization (LAPO) at the George Washington University. The mission of LAPO is to serve as a platform for the discussion of Latin American affairs, providing the opportunity for students to organize and participate in events, publish written content, and develop professional skills.

Latin America is growing as a key player in global affairs and strengthening its ties to the United States. At LAPO we believe that the region’s relevance should be echoed on the campus of the George Washington University, home to the internationally renowned Elliott School of International Affairs. Given the academic caliber, high enthusiasm, and strategic location, this Organization aims to advance its goals throughout the proactivity of well informed students at the George Washington University.

As the Chair of the Latin American Policy Organization, I intend on working closely with key leaders within the university’s staff and student body to increase the relevance of Latin American affairs on campus, by hosting events, sharing and publishing content, and creating a non-partisan platform for students to learn and further their insight about Latin America.

Last year, ex-president Alvaro Uribe addressed GW students during the Planning Colombia’s Future event. These kind of opportunities disseminate the necessary information to dissipate unawareness, engage civil society, and support interconnected citizens that are now able to transcend regional barriers thanks to globalization. It is my aspiration to recreate these sort of initiatives in order to promote academic learning, support professional development, and foster a community of knowledgeable and empathetic members.

At LAPO, we are excited to begin this new academic year. I welcome you to learn more, share, and join.

Sincerely,

Cody Tomás Etlin
